Adios, Willard!

Longtime readers of the blog might remember my little, ahem, houseguest from 2010.  If not, jump over here to read a little post from March 2010, when I discovered I had a rat.  Yes.  A rat.

This rat had been roaming around my house, pooing on my heating and sleeping in the pullout drawer underneath my stove.

Stove/Rat Boudoir

Even though my mother cleaned that drawer well before I moved in, I just could not bring myself to store anything in it.  I was just beyond grossed out.  My stove was made in the 1500s or at least it felt like it.  It took forever to get hot and it was this sad, almond color that did not go at all with the new updated vibe I was trying to capture in my kitchen.

I like to poke around Craigslist from time to time.  I've gotten some really great deals in the past.  I'm actually sitting on one of my deals - an IKEA Ektorp loveseat I found on the Dallas Craigslist.  Across the room is my $50 Craigslist sofa.  Well, chalk one more up to Craig and his list.  Presenting, my new stove:

For $200!  Gorgeous, right? It came out of a new construction house where the owners had upgraded their appliances and didn't need the builder's grade anymore.  As best I can tell, this range would have run me $550 minimum new, and it practically is!  It heats really quickly and beeps to let me know when it's hot.

Plus, it's pretty!  We donated my old stove to Habitat for Humanity, so not only will the proceeds from its sale go to further that wonderful mission, but the stove isn't in a landfill somewhere!  I'm so, so excited about it all and really encourage y'all to check your local newspapers and Craigslist before buying new.  You can usually save a bundle, and you're helping Mother Earth by recycling!

A Tale of Two Purples

Tuesday, May 22, 2012

Or maybe more like 4 and a half purples.  Whatever.  The point is, I'm currently in the process of updating my hall bath.  Here's what it looked like a few weeks ago:

Note the beige faux-tile panelling and the tiny print of the pastel floral wallpaper.  Outdated, right?

My mom and I (okay, mostly my mom because 1) it's too small for two people and a step-stool and 2) I got bored) scraped the wallpaper off this past weekend.  My color scheme for the room was inspired by this 1860s fashion print I bought in Belgium last year - purple and brown.  I'm going for a vintage Paris feel - romantic and elegant.

Obviously additional accessories, including the fashion plate itself, will be required.  But I picked all of this stuff, except for the little white tissue box cover, at Kirkland's today.  The set of three small apothecary jars were on sale for $25 for the set.  Everything else was half off - go me!

With the wallpaper scrapped off, I was able to try out some different shades of purple, with enticing names like 'Wisteria', 'Rhapsody Lilac', and 'Magical'.  I also gave 'Brave Purple' a go.

I'm leaning toward Brave Purple, but my mom likes Wisteria better, fearing that Brave Purple is going to be too dark and make the room feel small.  However, I'm doing vertical stripes - flat and satin (or maybe semi-gloss) of whatever shade I do, so at least the room should feel taller.

The ceiling isn't really sloped - it's just the wide-angle lens I used to fit as much of the bathroom into the shot as I could.

What do y'all think?  Darker?  Lighter?  Should I be 'Brave' or stick to the sweet sight of 'Wisteria'?

and the livin' is easy.
fish are jumping',
and the cotton is high.

oh, your daddy's rich,
and your ma's good-looking',
so hush, little baby,
don't you cry.

one of these mornings,
you gonna to rise up singing.
yes, you's spread your wings,
and you'll take to the sky.

but till that morning,
there's nothing can harm you,
yes, with daddy and mommy
standing by.

and the livin' is easy.
fish are jumping',
and the cotton is high.

oh, your daddy's rich,
and your ma's good-looking',
so hush, little baby,
and don't you cry.

I hope everyone else is having as wonderful a start to summer as I am!

Cinco de Mayo

Monday, May 14, 2012

I was eaten by finals (and should really be studying right now) and didn't get to share my photos from my Cinco de Mayo fiesta.  It was the first party I've hosted in my little house and I had a great time.  I think everyone else did, too!

And yes, I did have a costume change - I sprayed water on myself while cooking and had to switch from my purple Mexican dress to my pink one.  I switched back once it dried out, though!  OlĂ©!

What's In Bloom!

Tuesday, May 8, 2012

It's early summer here and while my bulbs, roses, and passionflowers have mostly faded, I do still have some pretty summer color.  Geraniums, petunias, and my personal summer favorite, hydrangeas!  It was such a hot summer last year that I lost one of my pretty baby hydrangeas, but the remaining three are boasting such a lovely mixture of blues, purples, whites, and even pink, that it's hard to mourn the loss!

Anyone have any other suggestions for gorgeous summer color that can stand the heat?  Let me know!
