One for My Lawyer Ladies

Wednesday, March 30, 2011

A New Orleans lawyer had searched title back to 1803 for his client, a federal agency.  The agency asked who owned the land prior to that date.  The lawyer replied:
I am in receipt of your letter of the fifth of this month inquiring as to the state of the title prior to the year 1803.
Please be advised that in the year 1803 the United States of America acquired the Territory of Louisiana from the Republic of France by purchase.  The Republic of France previously acquired the title from the Spanish Crown by conquest.  Spain acquired title by virtue of the discovery of one Christopher Columbus, a Genoese sailor who had been duly authorized to embark upon his voyage of discovery by Isabella, Queen of Spain.  Before granting such authority, Isabella, a pious and cautious woman, obtained the sanction of His Holiness, the Pope.  The Pope is the Vicar on earth of Jesus Christ, the only son and heir apparent of God.
God made Louisiana.
I came across this in my reading for Property and thought it particularly appropriate, considering my weekend sojourn.

Joie de Vivre

Sunday, March 27, 2011

I'm back from my weekend trip to the fine state of Louisiana.  If you follow me on Twitter, you probably got a couple of updates about what I was up to as I was up to it.  If you don't, well, pas de problème.  I have a recap just for you, and it comes with pictures!

After pulling into town and grabbing dinner at CPK (yum!) with my BFF Big Pony and seeing Paul (super funny, just as I had thought), I crashed hard onto her air mattress.  We got up the next morning bright and early and took the town by storm.  We started out at Magnolia Mound Plantation on Nicholson.

(this guy will someday be this guy)

Then we went to the Castle, also known as the Old State House.

I didn't see Sarah Morgan, but the stained glass rotunda did remind me of La Sagrada Familia with all it's bright primary colors and Gothic decadence.  The movie about Sarah Morgan wasn't bad, worth the $3, and the exhibit on Huey P. Long was very well done.  Speaking of, after the Castle, we just had to go see Huey P. Long's replacement State House.  We didn't go in, just drove around before stumbling into Spanish Town (Baton Rouge's oldest neighborhood).

Big Pony and I have decided to buy a duplex in Spanish Town and decorate it with pink flamingos and green palm trees and, of course, lots and lots of Lilly.  After that, we grabbed some barbecue lunch at Voo Doo BBQ (I've definitely had better pulled pork, but the cole slaw and fries were good) and then stopped by and said hello to Mike the Tiger.  At that point, well, it was nap time for Biz.  I conked out for about two hours then managed to wake up enough for dinner and fro' yo'.

The next morning (ie. today), we had the BEST breakfast at LaLou.  Y'all, I'm not even kidding when I say it was DELICIOUS.  I had a caramel pecan pain perdu (basically French toast with caramel syrup and fresh cream and powdered sugar and just HEAVEN in breakfast form); Big Pony had a massive pancake.  The cafe au lait I ordered wasn't bad either, and the OJ was good and fresh.  Top notch breakfast location and I highly recommend it!

I parted ways with Big Pony at this point and headed back to Southern State.  On the way, I stopped off at the always beautiful Afton Villa.  I went when I was little and have remembered it fondly.  It's such an inspiration, and I'd love to be able to bring some of its beauty and elegance to my own garden, albeit on a much smaller scale and maybe with a little less formalism - no time to maintain a boxwood maze in my life!

(my new desktop photo)

That last photo is on my way out and back home.  It's not even 10 o'clock, but I think I'm going to take a hot bath and hit the hay - I'm exhausted!  I hope y'all had a wonderful weekend, too, and as always, I'd love to hear about it!

Spring Trees!

Wednesday, March 23, 2011

Spring has arrived in Southern State and my flowering trees sure know it!

My crabapple in the back!

My redbud in the front!

Even the little crepe myrtle I had planted last summer is sending out buds!

I pruned it like you're supposed to last fall and I'll admit,
it looked a little sad without all the smaller branches.  So
I'm glad it's going to leaf out for the summer!

Trip to the Botanical Gardens

Monday, March 21, 2011

I went to the botanical gardens on Saturday and had so much fun frolicking amongst the flowers.  Here are a few of my favorite shots.  I dedicate this post to my pal Betsy, who lives in the frozen Midwest and is longing for spring.

Daffodils, Hyacinths, and Irises - Oh my!

I went to Southern State's botanical gardens this weekend with my mom, and I think I was inspired to show off my own garden.  As I mentioned here a few weeks ago and starting planning almost a year ago, I have a small bulb bed in my front yard which circles my redbud tree.  It's been doing really well and I wanted to show off some of my daffodil collection.

Taken mid-bloom; it's much more filled out

Just before it opened.

Later that afternoon.

My favorite!

My friend MK and I stole tulips from campus one year for our friend Rachel's birthday.  I can't help but think of them both whenever I see my bulbs, even though they aren't tulips at all, and it makes me smile.  I love my little bulb bed; it makes coming home that much more cheerful!  Hope your weekend was filled with sun, flowers, and friends!

An Irish Blessing

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
May the rains fall soft upon your fields,
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Snooki Gets a Clerkship!

Tuesday, March 15, 2011

My pal finally put up the photos she took from the Jersey Shore party we attended Friday.  Note my Snooki poof.  There are very few photos that were Facebook acceptable and even fewer that were blog friendly.  Still, I had so much fun, even if I felt crazy tacky and was praying people didn't think I actually dressed like that or that I thought I looked good.

I was all kinds of orange, thanks to my sweet pal's self tanning lotion that thankfully came off in the shower that night.  I was rocking that Jersey tan but was too paranoid to sit on my white furniture.  So much fun and I can't believe I didn't go to more swaps in undergrad.  Of course, as exciting as these photos are, I have more exciting news.

I got a clerkship with the state Attorney General's office!!!!!!!!!!!!!  After many hours crying, questioning if I was cut out to be a lawyer, if I was just going to waste three years of my life and end up depressed and poor and jobless with no work experience to put on my puny resume, I got a blessed phone call this afternoon.  I'll be working in the Public Protection department and am just BEYOND excited.  Talk about the BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER.  I got the call in the car, and I'm pretty sure I was screaming so loudly in the car that I made dogs howl.

It's been a really stressful couple of weeks, but I'm so proud of my little batch of friends.  Every single one of us who went through OCIs came out with at least one clerkship (and one smarty pants has Summer, Fall, and Spring clerkships!).  Three of us, myself included, will be going to the AG's office.  One of my sweet pals will even be there in the spring with me, albeit in another department.  I'm just so so thrilled that I can barely talk about it.

It's like Meg at Deviled Megs said, "all the bad situations and tough things you have to go through, well they just make you better prepared to truly appreciate and savor the good things that may come your way."

Boy, am I savoring!

Live Color Fully

Monday, March 14, 2011

So I was flipping through Marie Claire the other day when I spotted this fabulous ad:

Now, I love everything about Bryce Dallas Howard.  If I could switch bodies with someone, it would be her, hands down.  She's tall, sports gorgeous red hair, and have you seen the shape of her eyes?  To die for!  And now, she's got an ad campaign for Kate Spade.  LOVE!

Three of my favorite things: bright colors, redheads, and bicycles!

(my favorite!)

Pretty sure I need that jacket!

I know tons of people have already blogged about this campaign, but you know what?  I haven't.  And I bet they didn't blog about a giveaway.  That's right.  My friend T is giving away a super cute pencil Kate Spade case here.  I haven't entered because, well, to be honest, I wouldn't use it and I'd like the prize to go to someone who would!  After all, Kate Spade deserves to be used and loved.

Hope your week is going well and that you're living color fully!
