mean

Tuesday, October 19, 2010

you, with your words like knives
and swords and weapons that you use against me
you have knocked me off my feet again,
got me feeling like a nothing,
you, with your voice like nails on a chalkboard
calling me out when i'm wounded
you, picking on the weaker man

well you can take me down with just one single blow
but you don't know, what you don't know...

someday i'll be living in a big ol' city

and all you're ever going to be is mean
someday i'll be big enough so you can't hit me
and all you're ever going to be is mean
why you gotta be so mean?

you, with your switching sides
and your wildfire lies and your humiliation
you, have pointed out my flaws again
as if i don't already see them
i walk with my head down
trying to block you out 'cause i'll never impress you
i, just wanna feel okay again

i bet you got pushed around
somebody made you cold
but the cycle ends right now
'cause you can't lead me down that road
and you don't know, what you don't know...

all you are is mean
and a liar, and pathetic, and alone in life
and mean, and mean, and mean, and mean

but someday i'll be living in a big ol' city
and all you're ever going to be is mean, yeah yeah
someday i'll be big enough so you can't hit me
and all you're ever going to be is mean
why you gotta be so mean?

Lilly Needs Surgery

Saturday, October 16, 2010

My pup is having surgery on Wednesday.  She has a Grade II luxating patella (basically, her kneecap pops in and out of socket) in her right hind leg.  We have to drive an hour on Wednesday to the doggie orthopedic surgeon.  Her surgery is scheduled for 8:45 but we're going to try to get there around 8:00 so I can drop her off and head back to Capital City before class.  She has to stay overnight and then when she comes home on Thursday, she'll have a pain patch sutured on.  I'm not sure how long the convalescence is, but I think it's about 2 months.

I'm worried about my punkie.  :(  My parents' dog Chloe had the same procedure with the same vet and she's fine, but even so, Lilly's my baby, which makes it scarier.  The surgery is also really expensive - $1600 for one knee, $2500 if both knees need correction.  Thankfully my parents are paying for it, but my mom told me that year to date, we've paid the vet around $6,000 for medications, visits, etc.  I feel a little bit guilty, but at the same time, I know my parents love Lilly, too, and don't want her to be in pain just because I don't have a job or money.  Nor are they going to make me go into debt to pay for it.

Plus, I have a revised version of my first closed memo due Monday and a draft of my second memo due Wednesday.  I can already feel the stress growing.

Finally, One that Fits!

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

I've been searching for a pet safety harness for Lilly in the car.  I know a crate is safest, but it's so impractical for short trips.  Unfortunately, as with most things for my 4 lb, 9-in tall girl, the last two halters I've tried were just too big!  She's such a long, lanky thing that stuff that is tight enough is usually too short.

When I was at Petsmart today, buying stairs for my punkers so she doesn't jump on the couch anymore and hurt her knees, I found the above halter.  I got the extra small, which says it fits 12 in - 16 in, and with a little bit of adjustment, I think it's perfect.

I'm really looking forward to using it on her, because it makes it hard to drive with her crawling all over me and it's dangerous for both of us.  I'll be sure to let you know how it goes!

Manager's Special

Sunday, October 10, 2010

Can we please take a gander at my "Manager's Special" flowers I bought today?

Would you believe me if I told you they were a grand total of $3.60?  Fact.  I love fresh flowers, and I adore bringing a little luxury to my life without spending a fortune.  At $3.60, I can totally afford to have gorgeous flowers in my bathroom.  So happy.  :)

Woo hoo! Another Tag!

Saturday, October 9, 2010

I mean, yes, the entire point of a blog is to chat about myself for other people to read, but tags are so much fun because they make me think of random little facts about myself that might not come up otherwise.  My latest follower/blog I'm following, Kit from A Step into My Life, tagged me with these fun questions, so get ready to learn a little más about moi (which, should I ever move, will totally be my new blog name - Más about Moi)!

As I understand the rules, I am given the following questions, which I answer, then I get to make up 8 questions and tag 8 people to answer them.  Unfortunately, I don't know that I know 8 people who would answer them, but we'll give 'er a shot!

What is your favorite food,
thing to cook, or eat?
Spaghetti.  Or really, any kind of pasta.  Mmm, carbs.

If you could do anything with
your life what would it be?
(money is not an object)
Quería ser maestra de español.

Where is your favorite place to shop?
target please!

What is your favorite memory of all time?
Ooh, that's a toughie!  I think, though, that it's probably a tie between finding out I not only got into my undergrad degree program of choice but also got a full scholarship and finding out I not only got into my law school of choice but got a full scholarship again.  The knowledge that I will, with any luck, graduate debt free from law school is such a wonderful bit of relief.

What is the best thing that
you have ever bought?
Easy - my sweet Lilly.

If you could start a charity
what would it's platform be?
[not my Lil, but still presh]
Is it too gooby to say a Poodle rescue?

What is your favorite picture of
you or one you have taken?
This photo was taken during one of the photo shoots for rush.
I had new head shots and a full length photo.

What is your greatest pet peeve?

White shoes after Labor Day.  Just...no.

Questions!
1)  If you could be fluent in any foreign language, which would it be and why?
2)  Are you a dog person or a cat person?
3)  Pretty shoes or practical shoes?
4)  If you could have your own version of Eat, Pray, Love, what three places would you go and what three verbs would you pick?
5)  East coast or west coast?
6)  Do you regularly go to worship services?
7)  How do you feel about betta fish?
8)  If you could change your hair color to any shade and have it look totally fabulous and natural, which would you pick?

Ballad of a Dove

Friday, October 8, 2010

Lord, make me a rainbow.  I'll shine down on my mother.
She'll know I'm safe with You when she stands under my
colors.

"Almost Name"

Does anyone else have an "almost name"?  You know, the name your parents almost named you?  My parents considered several names, like most people, but I think the one that came closest to actually being used was Tessa Marie.  Not Theresa Marie, I don't think, but just Tessa.

I actually like the name Tessa.  It reminds me of...

Tess of the D'Urbervilles

Tess Tyler (and her twin sister Emily Tyler), played by one of the Olsens

Marie, though, I don't care for.  To me, it sounds like the middle name you give when you can't think of a middle name.  Granted, so is Leigh, but I think the spelling of my Leigh is pretty and it has a nice meaning - meadow.  And who knows?  Maybe I would have loved it if it had been mine.

Other Close Ones
  • Yolanda Sophronia (jokingly, I think/hope, though Sophronia was my great-great-grandmother's name.)
  • Jacqueline (after my dad, though they decided to nix that one in case they had a boy after me and wouldn't end up with Jack and Jacqueline)
As I recall, had my parents had a second daughter, she would have been named Tessa, which, in light of my own name, I don't really care for.  I feel like children's name should, not match per se, but go together.  Coordinate, if you will.  Don't have John, Mark, Luke, and Brian.  Don't have Brittany, Amber, Kelsey, and Joan.  (You know, by the way, that Joan would totally end up a Mary Bennet.)

These are pretty stark differences, I know, but there is a family I know, and the children are named Anna, Emily, Jennifer, and Rachel.  I personally would not have gone with Rachel for Baby Girl #4, given the other four children's names.  Maybe Meredith or Caroline.  Classic and not too trendy but not Biblical, just like the other names.  Had the other girls been named Sarah, Mary, and Leah, then absolutely go with Rachel!  It fits perfectly!

Personal taste, personal call.

Tag! You're It!

Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Hee hee!  I love being tagged - any excuse to talk about myself and all that jazz.  :) Jess over at Where are my Sunglasses? (best blog title/description I've seen in a looooong time!) kindly suggested that I answer these questions...and by suggest, I mean she picked me because I'm one of her newest followers.  Tomato, tomahto.

1. What was the last thing you ate?
(Mine didn't look quite like that...)
Lean Cuisine Chicken Pecan frozen dinner.  I live off frozen foods, mostly because I'm a terrible cook.  Decent baker, terrible cook.

2. What is one of your best childhood memories?
Playing in the Gulf with my mom and my grandmother when I was about 4.  I remember standing with our backs to the ocean, knee-deep in the water.  They were each holding one of my hands, and every time a wave rolled in, they'd swing me up and we'd all yell in unison "PEANUT!"  I was so sure the next wave was going to be so huge that it would knock us all over, but each time, it was no bigger than a peanut.

3. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you were older?
"'Wa-ii girl" (also known as a professional hula dancer).  The logistical problems with this plan, given that I am neither Polynesian nor from Hawaii, never occurred to me.

4. Do you paint your toenails in the winter?
Absolutely.  My toenails are painted year-round.  I don't do naked nails.  They're currently Coney Island Cotton Candy by OPI.  A very basic nude.  (I said I don't do naked, not nude.  ;))

5. Do you watch any reality television? If so, what show is your favorite?
I'll catch the odd Rachel Zoe episode on occasion, but I'm mostly a scripted show kind of girl.

6. What were some of the "trends" when you were a kid?
Topsy-Turvy ponytails, stirrup pants, scrunchies, paaaaale denim jackets, anything from Limited, Too.

7. What is your favorite time of the year? Why?
I love fall.  The leaves, the light, the clothes...all of it, so yummy!

8. Do you have any hobbies?
Lord, just read my pathetic Serenity by Liz posts.  :P  As lame as it might sound, I really do enjoy tracking down vintage glasses and making them into candles.  I also like decorating my house.  I'm a member of a creative writing forum, and as I'm also interested in baking, my latest hobby is running.

OH!  And I'm gardening a fair bit lately.  I've got about 100 more bulbs to plant in my front yard.  Just call me Bree van de Kamp.

What I'm Loving Wednesday

I'm loving The Band Perry's song If I Die Young.

If I die young, bury me in satin.
Lay me down on a bed of roses.
Sink me in the river at dawn.
Send me away with the words of a love song.
It was on repeat all day today in the car.

I'm loving Westie Wednesday, at Desperately Seeking Seersucker.

(haha, you probably thought I was over Poladroid...think again!)
I genuinely look forward to hearing all about T's pup Louis.  Their adventures together remind me so much of me and the little Lil.  <3  This brings me to my next love of late...

I'm loving running.
Okay,  maybe an overstatement.  Lil and I went for a mile run/walk today.  She's exhausted; I'm hungry...  But I've decided to try to run the half marathon coming up in Capital City this spring so I sure as heck better start loving running.  My endurance at the moment is pitiful and practically nonexistent.  Still, you've got to start somewhere.

I'm loving that Life as We Know It comes out Friday.
I first heard about this movie on my friend Rachel's blog, {simple.little.joys}, and have totally been looking forward to it ever since!  I know where I'll be come Sunday afternoon - at the movies with my mama!  Hope it's as good as I think it will be!

Hope all of y'all are living and loving too!
XOXO

All American

Monday, October 4, 2010

Maybe it's the cooler weather we've been having the last few days, but I've been feeling very Norman Rockwell, All-American.

I live a few blocks from an elementary school, and last Friday, they had their autumn carnival.  One of my neighbors walks his two sons home everyday.  I had been out working in the yard about the time school got out and happened to see them come home.  The younger one raced past his father and brother to their house, exclaiming, "Did you see how fast I ran?"  The father nodded before calling to the older boy, "If you don't beat me home, you don't get to go to the carnival!"  The older boy was faster than greased lightning!

Later that evening, around sunset or maybe a little later, I noticed streams of children and parents flowing down the streets toward the school.  It was one of the first cooler days in autumn, the streetlights were just starting to come on, and it just felt...right.

Since I've moved home, my parents and I have started having Sunday dinner.  My mom cooks a real meal and I drive over and we eat at the kitchen table.  We used to eat dinner at the table every night when I was little, but at some point before high school, we started using TV trays and watching Wheel of Fortune together, which I guess could be its own form of Americana.  Despite this, it's nice to sit down and eat together at the table.  It's different, without the distractions and the noise.

Our dinner wasn't quite as impressive, but still pretty darn!  Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, steamed broccoli, and fresh, flaky biscuits.  Mmm!

While I was waiting for my mom to call me to let me know when to come over to eat, I was playing a video game doing homework, someone knocked at my door.  I was a little startled, but when I saw this little boy's face peering through the glass at me, I answered.

It was a Boy Scout!  I'm guessing he just moved into the proper Boy Scout troop, because he kept messing up and calling it a "den" before correcting himself.  I was so excited and tickled that I had a real, live Boy Scout at my door, selling me popcorn, that I got caught up in the moment and wrote a $40 check.  Can I afford the $40 popcorn?  Technically, yes.  I will not starve (especially if that popcorn comes soon, haha!).  Would I have purchased that much if I'd not been so flustered and excited?  Probably not, but I'm pretty sure I made that kid's day, and even if I didn't, I'm going to tell myself so.

Anyone else feeling particularly American these days?  I'd love to hear about it!

Best. Mom. Ever.

Friday, October 1, 2010

Guess whose mom called her up to say that they were taking an additional 40% off all sale items at Dillard's today and wanted to know if I wanted any new Lillys?

Seriously, if you can't figure that one out, you probably shouldn't be on the internet.

It was MINE!  She bought me not one, not two, but three new Lillys, including one that I have been loving from Fall 2010 and was thus very clearly not on sale.  True, one ended up going back because I didn't like the fit, but still, who else got surprised with two new Lillys today?!

So, in celebration of my mom, the woman who fostered my love for Lilly when I started college and has spent a small fortune ensuring that, if I wanted to, I could wear a different Lilly everyday for two weeks, I present my own Lilly wardrobe:

The Stephanie Shift in Turquoise Koi Print (Fall 2010)
[The latest acquisition]

Market Bag in "How About Them Apples" (Fall 2010)
[Free gift with purchase! LOVE.]

The Bel Air in Carsons Grandstand Patch (Spring 2010)
[Also new for today]

The Raya Blue Icing in Shorely Blue (Resort 2009)
[Fell in love with this one but they only had one size left, tracked it down in my size online and ordered it the next day.]

Orange, Red, and Pink Polka Dot cotton stretch (Summer 2009?)

The Amaya Top in Multi Swanky (Spring 2009?)
[So fun with my orange J. Crew shorts!]

The Andrey in Oh Jackie (?) (Fall 2008)

The Betsey in White Eyelet (Spring 2008?)
[Ritual white anyone?]

The Jacqueline Critter Dress in Kelly Green (Spring or Summer 2008)
[So fun for a Crawfish Boil!]

Caroline in Solid Hops True Blue Navy (Summer 2008?)
[That was the football season after I came back from Spain and lost 20 lbs.  Gosh, I was skinny!]

? in ? (Spring 2008?)
[Not the greatest shot of the dress, I know, but I sure had fun that night! Spring Break '08]

The Gweneth in plaid (Spring 2008?)
[obviously this is not the dress, but this is the plaid]

The Gweneth in "The Honey Spot" (?)

The Sienna in "Bright Navy South Lake" (Fall 2007?)

KD - ATO Country Club Swap - 2007
[Note the striped Gloria sweater!]

? in "Paradise Patch" (Spring 2006?)

(Literally the least flattering photo ever, but the only one with the dress. Whatevs.)
The Sienna in "Where's the Reef?" (Spring 2006?)
[My first Lilly]

Do you see now why I must have female offspring?!  So many beautiful dresses, not to mention the tops and scarves (both the Murphee and those fabulous breast cancer silk scarves) and totes I have scattered about would just be so unloved by a herd of boys!  Also, can anyone help identify the seasons, dresses, and styles where there are question marks?  It would be nice to know for sure!

ETALilly Pulitzer Line IDs helped me identify a couple of patterns.

Oh!  And I almost forgot!  Guess where I cuddle up each night, next to my precious Lilly?  Under my Breakfast at Lilly's bedding, of course:

I may have a minor addiction...no biggie.  What about you?  What are your favorite styles and patterns from years past?  Are you a self-made Lilly Lover or have you inherited your style from another fabulous lady?

Go Green With Lilly!  This was my first Market Bag, and I still love it.
The Market Bag in "Queen of Green" (Fall 2009?)
[Now if I can just remember to take these with me to the store!]

Also, if anyone's up for a game of Monopoly, I might just have a festive board to play with...

P.S. While searching for Facebook photos for this post, I stumbled across some very funny photos taken one late night in high school.
