A 1L's Worst Nightmare

Thursday, December 9, 2010

I would imagine all of my readers have been students at one point or another.  To borrow a phrase from Sophia Petrillo:  Picture it.

You've been studying for an entire semester - reading, analyzing, discussing.  You set your alarm for 6:15 am, plenty of time for an exam that starts at 9:00 am.  You close your eyes and drift off to sleep. . .

Your eyes open again.  You look out the massive window that is in front of your bed and you think, It's way too bright outside for 6:15.  It shouldn't even be light out yet...  You look over to your alarm clock.  It's blank.  You try to turn the light on.  It won't.  You have no power.

Your alarm clock failed.

You roll out of bed and sprint to your phone to check the time.  It's 9:35.  Your exam, the only grade you get the entire semester, started 35 minutes ago.  Promptly one minute later, you have on a bra (which you don't even remember putting on), some dirty jeans from the pile of laundry, and, somehow, two matching shoes.  You are missing deodorant, you have not brushed your teeth, let alone your hair, yet you are out the door.  You know your dog is going to pee somewhere in your house but you honestly don't have time to let her out.

You're in the car, making the drive that takes 20 minutes, but some how, you pull into the parking lot 10 minutes after you left your house.  You sprint up the stairs to the third floor, tripping and falling full out up the stairs.  You find your professor, explain the situation and begin your exam.  By the grace of God, your class started at 9:21.  You have only lost 20 minutes rather than the 45 minutes you expected.

You calm your nerves and manage to start the exam.  Things are going well, though you've developed a twitch in your lower left eyelid.  You work and work, keeping an eye on the clock.  You're going to do it, you're going to do it, you're going to do it.

Then your computer screen goes black.

The battery is dead.  You run down to IT and, again, by the grace of God, the head guy has a power cord.  You plug your computer up and finish the exam with two minutes to spare.

This was my morning.  How was your day?
